How to Build A Personal Brand
One part of the Google UX Design Professional Certificate covers the “Personal Brand”. I have been interested in this topic, so I thought why not share what I had learnt. I specialise in marketing, but the module provides me with more insights into personal branding.
All this while, I thought personal brand refers to how you curate your social media platforms or how others perceive you via your social accounts. However, I was wrong.
To develop a personal brand, you have to think of yourself as a celebrity. You have to take care of your online image and your reputation in person too! In other words, you want to be authentic both in-person and online.
Content:
1. Become more identifiable in person
Having a personal brand help to increase your visibility. You can make yourself more recognisable. This point leads to the next benefit.
2. Stand out from the crowd
Your personal brand will separate you from your competitors. The more you build your brand, the more you elevate yourself from your peers. The less you have to work to convince people you are capable to provide the solution to their problems.
Now that we covered the benefits, where do you start? Here are some questions you can ask yourself:
How do you see yourself?
How do others see you?
What are the common traits found in the intersection? These potential traits could be your values.
Now, it’s time to craft your story.
What kind of work do you do?
What do you value?
What you’re passionate about?
Where do you work currently, and if your job is in a related field?
Your credentials, like this certificate and any additional education
Any notable projects, clients, or awards?
Now, you can put up the content on your website and social media accounts. You would want to consider the following pointers for your personal brand too.
Colour Scheme
Font used
Images
Design elements
Writing Style
You want to be consistent across all the social media platforms. Your audience will piece together these perceptions to form an image of you.
Tips on Maintaining a Personal Brand
Now, you have created your personal brand. Here are some tips that you want to remember to uphold your personal brand.
Be mindful of what you post and how you interact on social media.
Although you might have a private account, someone else might take a screenshot and share it with others.
Do you want your future employer to see your posts?
If yes, you might consider having a separate account for your professional work instead.
This post focuses very much on building a personal brand online, but you have to remember that everything you do will affect your personal brand. You want to review your online presence carefully. You want to be authentic both online and in person.
Hope this article gives you a better idea about personal brand.
