How to be a Boss of your own life?

I am not talking about the business aspects but rather, could you be the boss of your own life? Are you taking charge of your life? I am inspired to write about this topic because it would be great if many learn to take back control of their own life (and time!)

1. What do I mean by being the Boss of your life?

In a corporate culture, being a boss means you have to make decisions that are beneficial to the company and exercise your authority. You are hiring the correct people to do the jobs. How do you translate that to your personal life? Are you choosing choices that will benefit your goals? Are you confident in the choices that you make? Do you have friends who push you towards your goals? In other words, you are “running” your life like a business.

2. Why should you be the Boss of your life?

Like it or not, life happens. You have to take control of your life. You are your only client! The cold hard truth is that you have to depend on yourself to improve the quality of your life. How you spend your time, energy and money could have an impact on your life.

Can you imagine having someone else run your life for you? When your life becomes a mess, are you going to blame others? Not only does blaming others make you feel helpless, but it also does not improve the situation.

3. How to be the Boss of your life?

One way to look at your life as a business is to map the different parts of your concern to the various departments. For example, HR maps to all the relationships in your life. Finance is about money. Sales might refer to your job or career; it is a transaction of your time and ability in exchange for money. Research and Development are all about learning and finding solutions. These are some crucial departments that push the growth of a company. Why would you not do the same with your life, right?

Once you have figured out the departments, the next thing you need to do is to create systems. How do you manage your budget? How are you going to spend your time? You need to implement systems for the various parts of your life. For example, you need to manage your time for people and projects that matter. You can try out calendar blocking to manage your time. You create an excel for budget and expenses tracking.

Having systems in place allows the process to be more efficient. For example, your wardrobe - limit your articles of clothing to any 5 colours of your choice. That would make it easy for you to mix and match. Or always prepare your outfit for the next day before going to bed.

Having systems allow you to spend your time purposefully too. Always relook into your system to make it work for you.

Now, you decide if you want to be the “boss” of your life.

x, Esther
