Would AI Take Over Our Jobs?

In this podcast, we will discuss if AI would take over our jobs.

Before diving into this topic, you might want to know that AI has always been integrated into our daily lives. For example, Spotify will recommend new songs based on your music playlist. In addition, some organisations integrate AI into their business structure. Here are two examples:

  1. DBS Bank

DBS Bank is a Singaporean multinational banking and financial services corporation. They have implemented an AI-powered chatbot, "POSB digibot", which interacts with customers on their website and social media platforms. The chatbot uses natural language processing (NLP) technology to understand customers' queries and provides them with personalised solutions. It has reduced customer wait time and improved customer satisfaction, resulting in a 10% increase in sales.

  2. Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines (SIA) is the flag carrier of Singapore and one of the world's leading airlines. SIA uses AI technology to analyse customer data and provide personalised travel recommendations. By tracking customer behaviour, such as search queries and previous bookings, SIA can offer customised travel packages and promotions that are more likely to appeal to individual customers. This has led to increased customer loyalty and higher revenue for the airline.

So, would AI take over our jobs?

Yes and No.

No, it will not take over our jobs in the near future. But yes, there is a slight possibility that AI might take over our job one or two decades down the road.

We have to feed AI with information so that it can study and piece the information together before answering. Moreover, it analyses past and current data. Therefore, AI is not 100% accurate, so we must depend on an expert's knowledge. On top of that, AI cannot take over Human Touch. AI is efficient, but it lacks the X factor. Nonetheless, when chatbots mature over time, they might take over some of our roles.

Pros and Cons of AI Applications

Here are some of the pros and cons of AI applications.

Pros:

  1. You can use such apps to perform repetitive jobs.

  2. You can use it as a digital assistant to brainstorm ideas with you, create codes for your website, etc. It's available 24/7.

  3. For businesses, AI provides personalisation.

In conclusion, AI Applications will do the above work for you, freeing up your time for other matters.

Cons:

One major con of using AI applications is that one tends to over-rely on these apps. I find this true after experimenting with ChatGPT. ChatGPT does provide great ideas that might work. Moreover, it saves me so much time from searching for "answers" when I google. I use some of ChatGPT's suggestions and tweak them to my style. I often prefer to create content without using ChatGPT due to the lack of creativity.

What skills or how can we work alongside AI to get better results?

As mentioned earlier, AI can't take away our human touch. We can practice authenticity and empathy in our daily life while AI helps us with some of the tasks. This might give us a result of the best of both worlds. Other than that, we can be more creative in our work, which AI can't do much (yet). AI applications can give us ideas, but we can use our creativity to come up with ideas to present the final product in a different light.

In conclusion, AI will not take over our jobs in the near future. AI is here to stay. Integrate AI applications into your daily life to make your life more efficient. However, do continue to upskill to stay ahead of the curve!
